Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Minho in Northern Portugal, the city of Braga stands as a testament to a rich tapestry of historical epochs. Known as the "City of Archbishops," Braga’s illustrious heritage dates back over two millennia, making it one of the oldest cities in the country. The city combines its ancient past with a vibrant modern culture, offering a unique experience for historians and tourists alike.
Braga’s history begins in pre-Roman times, originally inhabited by the Celtic tribe of Bracari. With the arrival of the Romans in the first century BC, the city, then called Bracara Augusta, rose in prominence as the administrative center for the region. The remnants of Roman architecture, including the ruins of thermal baths and an amphitheater, still echo the grandeur of that era. Arguably, this Roman influence laid the foundation for a city destined to become a cultural beacon in Iberia.
The significance of Braga took a pivotal turn with the spread of Christianity across the Iberian Peninsula. By the sixth century, Braga had become a key religious center, holding the distinction of being the seat of the first Archdiocese of Portugal. The city played host to the Council of Braga in 561, a gathering that marked a crucial moment in early Christian history. This Christian legacy is intricately woven into the fabric of the city, as reflected by the impressive number of churches and religious monuments that dot its landscape.
With over 40 churches, Braga rightfully earns its moniker. The Sé de Braga Cathedral, one of the oldest in the country, stands as a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Since its construction in the 12th century, it has witnessed numerous additions and renovations, creating a delightful amalgamation of styles that include Gothic and Baroque elements. Another notable site is the Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary situated atop a hill, famed for its baroque staircase that ascends 116 meters, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike for its breathtaking views and spiritual ambiance.
Braga’s character is defined by a harmonious blend of the past and the present. As a modern city, it flourishes with a youthful energy, partly due to the presence of the University of Minho, which has infused the city with a vibrant student population. This youthful vigor is most palpable during the Enterro da Gata, an annual students’ festival that brings together the city in a celebration of music, color, and life.
The festive spirit of Braga is ever-present throughout the year, with numerous cultural events that celebrate the city’s rich heritage. The Holy Week in Braga, or Semana Santa, is renowned throughout Portugal, drawing thousands of visitors who come to witness the elaborate processions and religious ceremonies. Similarly, the Braga Romana festival offers a glimpse into the city’s Roman past, with reenactments, markets, and performances that transport visitors back in time.
